Music
& Dance
Dance is often part of the musical tradition and the Theories or Nayaks who
are Pabu Bhopas, have a female accompanist; together they recite the phad (
a painted ballad). The phad itself is an elaborately painted work of art and
deeply venerated. The Chipas or Joshis are famous phad painters.

Tribals of Rajasthan
The Oswals hail from Osiyan near Jodhpur are successful traders and are predominately
Jains. While the Mahajan (the trading class) is subdivided into a large number
of groups, some of these groups are Jain, while others are Hindu. In the north
and west, the Jat and Gujar are among the largest agricultural communities.
The Gujars who are Hindus dwell in eastern Rajasthan.

Gems & Jewellery
One of the largest centers in the world for hand-cutting of gems, it is not
unusual to find shops here full of piles of precious stones, from onyx and cats
eye to lapis lazuli, carnelian, garnets, amethysts and topaz, the other end
of the scale there are rubies, emeralds and diamonds. Even those who would not
like to spend much can take their pick from the cabochons so that the costs
on the precious stones are greatly reduced.

Paintings
of Rajasthan
Paintings are nowhere more vibrant and expressing than that of Rajasthan. Tradition
of painting traces back to the dawn of civilisation. Traces of earth colour
drawings on walls and intricate motifs of geometrical and natural designs on
clay vessels and potteries have been unearthed in the proto-historic Harappan
sites of Kalibangan and Peelibanga in north-western Rajasthan.
